❤️ Why You’ll Love The Best Dusting Spray

The recipe for the best dusting spray comes straight from my Grandmother, Ruth! She used this DIY spray for everything in her home. And I mean everything! Tabletops, sideboards, shelves, coffee tables, side tables…you name it!

It really does work on everything and it cuts my dusting time during the month virtually in half–or more!

🧽 Materials for The Best Dusting Spray

I love olive oil and coconut oil! These two oils are multi-purpose and are commonly found in my home. So of course I’ll dust with them!

But how do these two oils work? How do they help my dusting?

They remove dust. The oils moisturize and protect. And they add shine.

Olive oil and coconut oil can help trap dust particles, making it easier for me to wipe them off surfaces. When applied in small quantities, it attracts dust and dirt rather than simply spreading it around.

For wooden furniture or surfaces, these oils act as natural moisturizers. They nourish the wood, prevents it from drying out, and helps maintain its natural luster. They can also protect the wood from cracking and prolong its lifespan.

On stainless steel and other polished surfaces, a thin layer of olive oil adds a subtle shine without leaving a greasy residue. It creates a glossy finish, making the surfaces look cleaner and more reflective.

🧼 How to Do

Just a tiny bit of dish soap goes a long way! Dust often contains oils, skin particles, and other substances that can make it sticky or difficult to remove.

Dish soap is designed to cut through grease and break down these residues, making it easier to wipe away dust effectively. That’s why I love to add it to my Grandma Ruth’s the best dusting spray recipe.

While vinegar and oils help polish and condition surfaces, dish soap boosts the overall cleaning power by dissolving dirt and cleaning the surface more thoroughly.

The small amount of dish soap helps prevent streaks and residue that may be left behind by oils or other ingredients, ensuring a clean, polished finish on surfaces like wood, glass, or metal.

In the best dusting spray, dish soap works in harmony with the other ingredients to ensure that surfaces are not only dust-free but also clean and well-maintained.

🪄 Tips and Tricks

I love to dust with microfiber cloths. Combining microfiber cloths with the best dusting spray is a powerful combination!

Microfiber cloths are excellent for dusting because they trap dust rather than just moving it around. The fibers have a natural static charge that attracts dust particles, making them much more effective than regular cloths or paper towels.

Plus, they can be used dry or dampened with water or dusting spray.

Also, I always start dusting from the highest surfaces (like shelves or ceiling fans) and work my way down.

This ensures that any dust that falls as I clean will be picked up on the lower surfaces, saving me from having to go over areas twice.

🗒 Variations

I love adding essential oils to my cleaning products. Essential oils like lemon, orange, lavender, tea tree, eucalyptus, or peppermint are some of my favorite choices for dusting sprays. I love their fresh scents and natural cleaning properties.

Citrus oils are particularly good for cutting through grease, while lavender and tea tree oil have antibacterial properties.

Once you’ve combined your other ingredients (like water, vinegar, or witch hazel), add 10-20 drops of essential oil to the mixture. For a standard-sized spray bottle (about 16 oz), 10 drops should provide a noticeable scent. Adjust according to your preference, but avoid adding too much, as essential oils are potent.

Keep in mind that essential oils don’t fully dissolve in water or vinegar, so the mixture will separate over time. Be sure to shake the bottle thoroughly before each use to re-mix the oils.

After adding the essential oils, secure the spray bottle’s lid tightly and shake well. This helps disperse the oils evenly throughout the solution.

🗒 Substitutions

Looking for a substitution to using vinegar? Lemon juice has natural acidity like vinegar, making it an excellent substitute for cutting through grime and grease while leaving behind a fresh, citrusy scent.

It also has mild antibacterial properties. I just replace the vinegar with an equal amount of freshly squeezed or bottled lemon juice in the recipe.

🫙 How to Store

I store my best dusting spray in a dark-colored glass bottle (such as amber or cobalt). This helps protect the essential oils from sunlight, which can degrade their potency over time. Glass bottles are also resistant to chemical reactions, especially with essential oils.

I also store the bottle in a cool, dark place, such as a cabinet or pantry. I avoid leaving it in direct sunlight or near heat sources, as heat and light can cause the ingredients (especially oils) to spoil faster.

This spray may separate due to the combination of water and oil, so always shake the bottle thoroughly before use to ensure the ingredients are well-mixed.

I also make sure to label the bottle with the contents and the date I made it. This will help track how long it’s been stored. Most homemade cleaning solutions are best used within 1-2 months.

I also store my spray in locations that don’t experience extreme temperatures, such as the garage or near windows, as temperature fluctuations can affect the shelf life of the spray.

🤔 Common Questions

Why is dusting important?

Dusting helps remove particles like dirt, pollen, and allergens that accumulate on surfaces, which can affect indoor air quality and trigger allergies. It also prevents dust from building up and causing damage to furniture, electronics, and décor.

How often should I dust?

The frequency of dusting depends on factors like where you live and the amount of foot traffic in your home. Generally, it’s recommended to dust high-traffic areas like living rooms and kitchens weekly and less-used rooms like guest rooms every 2-4 weeks.

Why does dust seem to accumulate so quickly?

Dust is made up of a combination of particles like dead skin cells, dirt, pollen, and fibers from fabrics. High levels of humidity, open windows, or heavy foot traffic can increase dust accumulation.
